Farmington Creek Trail to Lagoon Trail

Distance: 2.5 mi | Location: Farmington | Best Seasons: Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter | Elevation Gain: 250 ft | Route Type: Out and Back | Bathrooms @ Trailhead: Yes

This trail is located in Farmington, Utah and follows the Farmington Creek through an area of thick trees and undergrowth. It is a great year-round hike and is beautiful any time of year (yes, even for snowshoeing). In this post, I am covering the trail up to where you can see the animals at Lagoon Amusement Park. That distance is doable for families with little kids that are either hiking on their own or riding a bike. For families that want to do a longer hike, there is the option to follow the trail to Ezra T. Clark Park which makes the total distance about 3.5 miles.

Getting There

The trailhead for Lagoon Trail is located at Farmington Pond. If you use Google Maps you can type in “Farmington Pond” and it will provide you with the most direct route from your location.

From Main Street turn onto 600 North (there is a sign on the corner for Farmington Pond if you are coming from the west). You will follow 600 North until you come to a T-intersection. Turn left at the T-intersection onto Farmington Canyon Road. When the road forks, you will want to stay to the left. After the fork, take your first left and follow that down to the parking lot next to the pond. If you continue straight that will take you to the upper parking lot. You can still access the trail from there, but it will make the total hiking distance longer.

To begin this hike you start by following the Farmington Creek Trail which will eventually lead you to the Lagoon Trail. For more trail directions please see below.

Trail Conditions

Lagoon Trail is a paved trail and is stroller, wheelchair, and bike friendly. This trail is great for those that want to get out during the mud season (early spring/late fall) or the summer as the trail is nice and shady.

Trail Directions

If you have never done Farmington Trail to Lagoon Trail it can be a little tricky to follow. The only reason I was able to find my way the first time I did this trail was because it was in the middle of COVID. There were swarms of people out walking the trail.

Below are directions. When we were there a section of the trail was under construction. Later this summer I will post updated pictures once the construction is done.

Starting at the lower parking lot follow the paved trail past Farmington Pond and down the hill past the waterfall.

As you near the bottom of the hill you will see a gate. This prevents road traffic from entering Farmington Creek Trail.

Gate

As you walk past the gate, the trail picks back up kitty-corner from the gate. If you walk all the way to the main road you have gone too far.

The trail will then pass through a tunnel, which takes you under the road.

As you exit the tunnel you will enter what looks like a parking lot.

Continue straight and just past the retaining wall you will see the trail pick back up on your left.

The trail will meander through the trees until you eventually come to a bridge that will take you across Farmington Creek.

You will then turn left and take another bridge back across the creek (like a little u-turn) and continue to follow the trail.

After a while, the trail will come to a road.

Below are some things you may want to do while you are out enjoying this hike:

Farmington Pond

The start of the trail is at Farmington Pond. Remember to bring oats, corn, peas or grapes so you can feed the ducks before beginning your hike. There is also the option to fish at Farmington Pond. The limit is 2 fish, but it is encouraged to release any bass that are caught.

Picnic Tables

There are picnic tables scattered along the trail. Be sure to pack a picnic so you and your family can spend even more time outside enjoying this beautiful area.

Animals at Lagoon

Not long after you pass over the bridge on the Lagoon Trail you will come upon some of Lagoon’s animals that they have for their Wild Kingdom Train. This is always a crowd pleaser for little kids and is a great place to stop and take a break before turning around.

Things to Be Aware Of

Currently, the trees are budding but everything should green up as we head into May. Fall is also an amazing time to visit due to the beautiful fall foliage. Unfortunately, the recent wind storms have not been kind to this trail. There were a lot of downed trees when we went. The city is in the process of cleaning them up but it has thinned out the landscape a bit on parts of the trail.

Enjoy

I hope you and your family get a chance to get out and enjoy this hike. We have done it twice now and I am looking forward to going back again when Dustin can come with us. If you have little kids that like to ride their bikes or skooters I would definitely recommend bringing them. It helps them cover the distance and is a fun way to experience the trail.
